The Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model® (CBEM)

Childhood bereavement profoundly impacts youth, families, and communities. In partnership with the New York Life Foundation, Judi's House/JAG Institute developed the CBEM to understand the magnitude of the issue. The CBEM approximates rates of U.S. children and youth who will experience the death of a parent or sibling by the time they reach adulthood.

CBEM information helps communities raise awareness of unaddressed grief, campaign for critical resources, and ultimately contribute to improved outcomes for bereaved families nationwide.

Who We Are

At Judi's House/JAG Institute, we believe no child should be alone in grief. To achieve this vision, our clinical team provides Comprehensive Grief Care® to children and families grieving a death, while the JAG Institute produces research findings and training tools to advance the field. We strive to create spaces that promote health and well-being so families can heal together.

Judi's House/JAG Institute partners with the New York Life Foundation to support grieving children and families through the analysis, production and dissemination of the CBEM and associated resources like this dashboard. The ongoing support of the New York Life Foundation has promoted improvements to the CBEM. This partnership underscores the commitment of both organizations to raise awareness about childhood grief and to support communities in providing the necessary resources for grieving children and families.
